How often should viral load be tested?

Q: I have been pos for couple of years now and my viral load has been undectable for most of this. how often should I get my viral load tested?

A: The answer to this question is a bit like answering  “how long is a piece of string”- it depends. The recommended frequency is 3 -6 months and whether it is 3 or 6months  or more frequently will depend on a variety of factors. I cannot comment on your specific  situation. Factors the clinician may consider include  duration of therapy, robustness of the regimen, presence of archived resistant mutations, ability to adhere to the regimen, treatment interruptions be they planned (NOT advisable) or accidental (eg  illness or travel ), drug absorption in the presence of diarrhoea and potential drug interactions to name a few.
